Superman 2025 Review: Does James Gunn Deliver a Super Start?
The full video review on Film Dweeb on YouTube.
Hey, Dweebs! Just sat through James Gunn’s Superman—the 2025 kickoff for his shiny new DC universe, and yeah, let’s talk about it.
So, first things first: David Corenswet as Superman. Never thought I’d see the guy from Pearl trading lines with Lois Lane in Metropolis! Wild. Remember all that Mia Goth Oscar hype that just…went nowhere? Guess Corenswet's the one cashing in with a cape and tights now. (And apparently, Mia’s off to a Star Wars gig. Honestly—doesn’t everyone do Disney at some point?)
Jimmy Olsen & Lois Lane: Casting Win!
Let’s give it up for Jimmy Olsen, because the guy they cast? Nailed it. I’ve seen him in a couple of things, but this is the first time he made me go, “Yeah, that’s Jimmy.” Lois Lane? She killed it too—even though, honestly, her name totally escapes me right now. (Note to self: add actor names before posting. Classic.) *Rachel Brosnahan and Skylar Gisondo.
The Actual Movie
Alright, big question: is it legendary? Eh…not really. Look, it’s not the best superhero movie ever, but did I enjoy it? Absolutely. It’s a good movie—a fun watch, good vibes, perfect for DC nerds and anyone just needing a solid popcorn flick. There are nods to the old movies and a few universe-building teases, but Gunn keeps things breezy. The flying scenes were surprisingly tame, nothing like the first Iron Man movie where Jon Favreau researched the flight scenes from Top Gun to make them more exciting. This could have have had the same. I think even the original Superman from 1978 had more thrilling scenes.
The Look
The only drawback for me was the look of it. The cinematography. It had that strange desaturated high key low contrast look, but many of the lens choices reminded me of a Red Bull commercial, especially the flying scenes. And the skintones had that weird pastel look to it. It’s the main drawback of the whole thing was the image and sound were just…eh. The weakest part of the movie.
Final Thoughts
So, would I say “drop everything and run to the theater”? Maybe not. But if you want to see the DCU get a fresh start without the stress—it’s worth your ticket. Curious what everyone else thinks!
