John Turturro plays Harry Lehman, a pickpocket past his prime in a city that no longer runs on cash. Noah Segan, a longtime Rian Johnson collaborator, makes his feature directing debut. He keeps it classic: a locked-off camera, no flourishes, and a look that feels like film. The style suits a story about defiance in the face of obsolescence.
It's a simple character study and mostly goes where you expect, but that's part of its charm. Turturro is excellent, and likely to get awards attention. If you love New York movies, this is a warm, tangible love letter to the old, dirty city.
